India's capital Mumbai bears some areas where dhobis - local washermen - are cleaning, drying and ironing the dirty clothes of Mumbai. The largest one - Mahalakshmi Dhobi Ghat - is the home of around 1000 people who work with and around the laundry and who also live in this area. They use a complicated system of marks on the clothes, which ensures that every item that got picked up by the dhobis at the customer's doors also finds its way back to it's owner. I have accompanied Rajesh, a former dhobi, who explained every detail of the washing process and showed me the different areas of the Dhobi Ghat.
